FROM GOODREADS: Everybody knows Cate Cahill and her sisters are eccentric. Too pretty, too reclusive, and far too educated for their own good. But the truth is even worse: they're witches. And if their secret is discovered by the priests of the Brotherhood, it would mean an asylum, a prison ship- or an early grave.

Before her mother died, Cate promised to protect her sisters. But with only six months left to choose between marriage and the Sisterhood, she might not be able to keep her word... especially after she finds her mother's diary, uncovering a secret that could spell her family's destruction. Desperate to find alternatives to their fate, Cate starts scouring banned books and questioning rebellious new friends, all while juggling tea parties, shocking marriage proposals, and a forbidden romance with the completely unsuitable Finn Belastra.

If what her mother wrote is true, the Cahill girls aren't safe. Not from the Brotherhood, the Sisterhood- not even from each other.

MY THOUGHTS:

Honestly, it took me awhile to get into Born Wicked. I'm not really sure what it was that was blocking me being able to get completely sucked into this world. Maybe I just couldn't connect with Cate at the very beginning. The story just seemed really dry. Maura completely drove me bonkers. She was just annoying, and a typical fifteen year old. Tess was just adorable though. I stuck through the story, and things really started picking up about half way through.

I got attached to Cate and Finn's blossoming relationship very quickly. For some reason, just the thought of being stuck in the closet of an old bookstore with a nerdy but cute bookseller just gets my heart beating a little faster. A big change from the typical bad boy love interest's I'm used to seeing in YA books these days.

This book is really hard to talk about, because it was just a meh book for me until about the last hundred or so pages. Stuff really starts going crazy, I needed to know what was happening as fast as possible! BUT THAT ENDING!!! ERMAGAWD, JESSICA SPOTSWOOD!! YOU ARE KILLING ME WITH THAT CLIFFHANGER!! GRRRRRRRRRR! I will be picking up Star Cursed in the future for sure, because I need to know what the heck is happening! And I need more Finn too!! Overall, I liked Born Wicked for the most part, but I didn't start really enjoying it until the last 1/3 of the book so for that reason, I give it three hearts!

  1. Great review, I totally feel the same way.
I've had the second book for a while now but I haven't started it because of how boring the first book was. Hopefully its good, and you enjoy it if you plan to read it.

    1. I hope so too. I figure I'll probably pick it up if I find a good deal on it or whatever, but I'm not so sure that I'll go out of my way to buy it. I'm glad I wasn't the only one who felt this way about it!! Thanks Aneta!

  2. I do love books with bookstores and booksellers, but this one sounds like a big of a drag. I'm glad to hear that the ending was good. :)

  3. Nice review, Becca. It's always hard to know what to say when the book doesn't have you jumping up and down. I'm glad that it did pick up, although the cliffie stinks. I've had this book on my shelf for awhile...I'm not feeling so guilty about that at the moment. ;)

    1. I know. I had really mixed feelings on this book. I had mine for awhile too, that's mainly the reason I picked it up, but it's not a book that I would push someone to read as soon as possible (LIKE I WOULD WITH DEFIANCE!! HINT HINT :) ) Thanks though, girly! <3
