Bookish Banter #5

Monday, February 24, 2014

Welcome, welcome to the fourth edition of Bookish Banter! This is a weekly blog post where I talk about bookish topics with Elizabeth of Redhead Reader and Ellen of Pottermorebooks!

This weeks discussion is...

SPOILERS! Do you read them or avoid them? Has anyone ever ruined a book for you?

MY ANSWER:

Oh geez.

This is a sore topic for me at the moment.

Spoilers are the devil. THE DEVIL, I TELL YOU!!

I try to avoid them like the Bubonic Plague. Or I try to, at least. But it doesn't always work out for me. Which leads me to my SPOILER HORROR STORY!

The Walking Dead. Oh gosh. I am a die hard fan of TWD. Like seriously. I am obsessed with it. I specifically avoided reading the comics, because I don't want it to spoil any part of the show for me, even if they do vary quite a bit. But at the beginning of Season Four, I found an article on Yahoo about it, and decided to read it. Usually they post a spoiler warning. I mean, they do the majority of the time..

BUT THIS TIME THEY DIDN'T.

AND I FOUND OUT ABOUT A CHARACTER THAT'S GOING TO DIE THIS SEASON. AND IT IS ONE OF MY FAVES AND IT HASN'T HAPPENED YET AND TRYING TO KEEP THIS SECRET SO I DON'T SPOIL IT FOR ANYONE ELSE IS KILLING ME. I CAN'T TAKE IT. ANYONE WHO POSTS SPOILERS WITHOUT POSTING A WARNING IS A TOTAL DOUCHE CANOE, AND I HATE THEM.

*Phew* I told you this was a sore subject for me right now. LOL.

What about you?
How do you feel about Spoilers? Read em or Avoid em?

  1. I hate spoilers too. But if it's for something I don't like much then I'm fine.

    1. Yeah, that's true. I just care if they are about my kind of something! LOL

  2. It makes me so angry when people post spoilers. When House of Cards' second season was released a week ago, I saw people spoiling on FB within HOURS. HOURS. Seriously. Can they at least wait until people finish watching a damn episode? Sometimes I feel like it's a rush against time to watch something before somebody spills. :(

When it comes to books, the only time I really look at spoilers is when I'm not sure I'm going to finish a series, or when it's a really old book/classic. I figure at that point it doesn't really matter.

    1. YES! I know exactly what you mean. I make it a point to avoid social media until after I watch something like that bc I know if I don't someone somewhere will ruin it for me!

Yeah, I think I would do that too!

  3. I don't actually mind book spoilers, since if there's something in there I don't want to read, I'd avoid it. Or it helps me prepare, though it doesn't always work, since I knew about The Fault in Our Stars and still cried my eyes out. But, I hate TV spoilers. They are the devil, I watch Pretty Little Liars and Revenge once the seasons finished (because really, once a week, I just can't.) but a friend watches them as well, so I'm just like. NO. SHUT UP. I'm just lovely sometimes, haha.

    1. HAHA that's how I am too. I hate when someone asks me to tell them what happened to bc I know if I do they will get mad. My best friend asks me all the time even though, she KNOWS I always refuse! I just don't want to ruin anything for anyone!

  4. I've had some serious spoiler-induced anger over the last few months. i was reading the Vampire Academy books for the first time last month which is 6 books long and had the ending of book 6 spoiled for me by the time I was on book 2, plus a bunch of other random stuff throughout all of the books. I was so mad! I really enjoyed that series but somehow I know it would've been 100x better if people didn't post a huge spoiler in the first line of their Goodreads reviews without WARNING! So I am TOTALLY with you on that one. I HATE spoilers.. They are the DEVIL (as you so eloquently put it) haha

    1. AGH!! I would've been so ticked off. I just read them about a year ago, but thankfully, I didn't read anything even remotely related to it so that wouldn't happen. I've heard VA has gotten spoiled by quite a few people like that. Like WTF?! POST A WARNING AT LEAST AND THEN IT'S COMMON COURTESY NOT TO PUT IT IN THE DANG FIRST LINE!! Haha DEVIL SPOILERS!!! I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels this way!!

  5. I actually kind of like spoilers. Like, I won't go out of my way to find them but I won't look away when I come to them either.
I'm the type of person that likes being prepared for things to happen and it's no less fun to know the ending while you're getting there because the journey is a big part of it!
I actually have a post on my own blog about this if you'd like to check it out :)

    1. Not me. I like to be blindsided and mind effed to the max so any chance of spoilers is a no no for me, but I can understand why you would read them if you came across them! I'll go check it out! Thanks! :)

  6. I totally avoid them! I sometimes even avoid a review if I am really excited about the book! I just look at the rating!

    1. I'm ashamed to say that I totes do this too. I'm scared to read reviews of books I haven't read because of this reason! I'm glad I'm not the only one now! LOL

  7. I go back and forth about whether I want to be spoiled or not. It really depends on what the book/show is.

    1. I mean, if I'm not really invested into it, then I don't really care. But when it comes to TWD or one of my fav series, if you spoil it for me without warning, I'll kill you. Haha jk, but for real.

  8. Spoilers are awful!! That's one thing that always worries me when I write a review, that I'll end up spoiling something for someone unwantedly!

Sometimes, if I'm not too sure of a book or series, I wouldn't mind about the spoilers and actually search for them, but I always want the separate and with plenty of warning, thank you very much!!

    1. I KNOW!!! I worry about this too! Yeah, I agree with you, girl. WARNINGS ARE A MUST!

  9. I hate spoilers, honestly they are EVILLLLL. Even when there's a warning and tons of capital letters, it doesn't help, I feel compelled to read on, they're just too tempting... *gives evil eye to all spoilers on the planet*
And yay I finally came to your blog, *happy dance* I achieved something today :)

    1. EVILLLLLL! All I can picture right now is Mermaid Man off Spongebob Squarepants yelling that now. Haha I'm weird, I know. Haha yeah, I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little tempted, because I'm a rebel, but I physically force myself not to. I know if I don't, I'll be extremely ticked. Evidence of this is above, which happened OCTOBER of LAST YEAR, and I'm still ticked about it. AW YAY!! Thank you!! *claps hands*

  11. When it comes to shows I follow, I always read spoilers. I CAN'T HELP IT! It's just too tempting, and I'm too weak. I put a bit more effort into book spoilers though, because I know I'm going to be less motivated to finish a book if I know what's going to happen.

The worst spoilers for me are the ones that talk about an outcome you don't want. If I find out that so-and-so is going to end up with so-and-so, and I don't like it, I'm less likely to continue reading. :c

    1. Haha it is very tempting, but I force myself not to, because I know I will be royally upset. Yeah, I'm definitely less motivated to read a book if I know what happens to. I just feel like, what's the point? I already know how it ends now so whatevs.

AH YES!! Great point! I agree with this too, Jackie!!
