Bookish Banter #4

Monday, February 17, 2014

Welcome, welcome to the fourth edition of Bookish Banter! This is a weekly blog post where I talk about bookish topics with Elizabeth of Redhead Reader and Ellen of Pottermorebooks!

This weeks discussion is...

How often do you read outside your preferred genre?

MY ANSWER:

Hmm. Well, I'd say every once and awhile. I guess it mostly depends on if I'm getting sick of a certain genre. For instance, I used to be a reader of any and all dystopian and granted, I still love a good one when I can find it, but here lately, I've been picking up a lot more Fantasy, which used to be something I wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole!! I even picked up a contemporary or two in the past few weeks, and historical fiction! So mostly, it just depends on what I'm in the mood to read, and if a book in a genre I don't normally read is getting a TON of hype, then I am def going to pick it up ASAP!! That darn hype monster gets me all the dang time!

What about you?

  1. Same here! I usually read books that aern't in my comfort zone if they're all the hype. But I do occasionally read other genres when they're recommended to me or if the blurb sounds interesting. Great post, Becca!

    1. Thanks Aimee!! Yeah, it just all depends on my mood, I think!

  2. I love dystopians, science fiction and fantasy, but sometimes you just need something different, so I just go for highly recommended contemporaries, cause they really aren't my thing!

And I will always check a book highly recommended by fellow bloggers even if it's not my usual thing. That's what I love about this virtual book club I'm part of, getting to read books I might have not chosen myself but hopefully being pleasantly surprised!

Hmmm, I've thought about doing the book club thing before, but just haven't done it yet. I need to check it out sometime!

  3. I'd go through phases, Vampires, Werewolves, Witches, Historicals, Dystopia. Never read a lot of Contemporary though, but since blogging, I've read a lot, and there really is a lot of sub-genre's in contemporary itself, so for me that's out of my comfort zone, but I'm really enjoying it. High Fantasy, I don't read too much off because sometimes it just makes me brain hurt, but then there's THE WINNER'S CURSE. And that's just perfect.

    1. Yeah, High Fantasy is something I tend to stay away from because it makes my brain hurt too! LOL! But since I started blogging, I've picked up a few contemporaries too, which is something I've never done before, but I've enjoyed the few I've read for the most part!! AH THE WINNER'S CURSE IS PERF!! I LOVE IT!!

  4. I think a better question for me would be how often I read within my preferred genre. I have eclectic taste in books and read a little bit of everything. My favorite is fantasy though.

Last month I read six fantasy novels and this month I'm not reading any. Because I do themed months on my blog it's hard to read a lot of one type of book, and I kind of like it that way. Keeps things interesting.

  5. I agree with you about fantasy! I've never been a big fan of it, but I'm starting to read more of it. I've trying to read more genres I don't usually read, too. Great post :)

  6. I've been trying to spread out my reading preferences and I know how tough it is. While I do like Romance (YA or Adult), sometimes, pulp fiction is what I turn to.

    Great post!

    1. That's mostly what I read but since I started blogging, I've stepped into a little bit of contemporary reads that really surprised me at how much I liked!

  8. It's funny because I am the exact opposite! The hype monster actually scares me away! Well, I wouldn't say scare... But if a book is overly talked about I actually kinda get sick of it and I just tend to stay away. Then when the hype dies down, I'll then pick up the book. I'm weird like that ;)
