#ArmchairBEA Day Two - Author Interaction

Tuesday, May 27, 2014

Let’s talk interacting with authors IRL (in real life) or online. This is your opportunity to talk about your favorite author readings that you have attended. Or, you can feature your favorite author fan moment (i.e., an author sent you a tweet or commented on your blog). Maybe you even want to share how your interactions have changed since becoming a blogger or share your own tips that you have learned along the way when interacting with authors as a blogger.

**

Unfortunately, being a reader from Oklahoma doesn't bring in that many author signings/readings. Over the past 3 years, I've been to four, which I'm totes not complaining at all, because I've been fortunate enough to be able to attend them all and meet some of my favorite authors. I just wish we got a couple more signings here! Which I'm not sure why, because I'm an incredibly awkward and shy person. I get all keyed up and nervous just talking to strangers, let alone strangers who wrote some of my very favorite books! I stutter, and well, I'm just a hot mess when I meet an author! BUT I LOVE IT!!! Here are some pics of the signings I've been lucky enough to go to!

This was my very first book signing to go to, which was Gena Showalter and P.C. Cast. I was so nervous to talk to them, and had no idea what to say. I just remember feeling very starstruck.

This is me with Neal Shusterman!! I actually had no idea about this signing until I went to Gena and P.C.'s signing, and saw a flyer for it. It was a week after, and I barely was able to get off work. As you can see, I was dressed up as the Sun Drop girl, because it was like the day before Halloween and we dressed up for work. Yeah, I got quite a few strange looks at that signing, and I was still just as starstruck!

Last summer, the Fierce Reads tour stopped by in Edmond, and I got to meet Jessica Brody, Leigh Bardugo (YES!), Anna Banks, and Emmy Laybourne! They were all super sweet, and I actually got to talk to them a bit more, because I waited to get my books signed last. IT WAS AWESOME!

And a few weeks ago, the summer Dark Days tour stopped by with Danielle Paige, Kiera Cass, Kelly Armstrong, and Kimberly Derting! You can read all about that experience here! Unfortunately, the place was packed and we didn't get to talk much, but I adored all of them, and *sad face* most of my pictures turned out blurry. *grumbles*

As far as author interaction on the interwebz? I never knew that I could tweet an author, and they would reply until after starting my blog. I always tweet them my pictures of Cover Puppies, and love their responses so much! I always take screenshots of them! It doesn't matter how many times an author replies to something I tweeted, I still squeal like crazy! It's just an awesome feeling, being able to connect that way! I actually talked to Julie Kagawa about her upcoming release, Talon, last night after I finished it, and IT WAS AWESOME! Btw, if you haven't checked out Talon on goodreads yet, do it now! Trust me, you want to keep your eyes out for this book. It's amaze-balls, epic, crazy, dramatic, and all around brilliant! I will push this book so so so much when it comes out!

What about you guys?
Any epic tales of author interaction?
Cannot wait to read everyone else's posts! :)

  2. The only book signings I've been to were one with Linda Gerber, Kay Cassidy and Rhonda Stapleton AND Weird Al Yankovic. A little diverse, but both fun! The thought of actually meeting authors is rather daunting, but it is neat to connect through Twitter or on an author's blog. Neal Shusterman would be very fun to meet.

  3. Surprisingly enough, Dallas doesn't get too many author signings either. We get some really big authors but the smaller to mid-size ones seem to have tapered off since my local indie closed. THEY were great at courting authors to do signings.

  4. Woooohooooo!! I keep on hoping more authors would make it across the pond to Spain, because I'm STILL MASSIVELY UPSET that I missed Maggie Stiefvater signing books in MADRID last year!! Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaah!! I'm not sure if I'd be able to make much conversation though!
And yeah, twitter is totally aaaaawesome to interact with authors!!

  7. Love your post, Becca! I too become a nervous wreck when talking to new people. I also don't get to go to many book signings. Not very many tours come to my area. I think it is AMAZING that you met Leigh Bardugo! I would love to meet her someday. And I agree, I know what you mean about feeling starstruck when you meet the person that wrote the books that you really enjoy/love! :D

  11. The multi-author tours are really great. I missed that Dark Days tour but I heard the stop by me was crazy-full, which is great. I've been to a bunch of events and I love it when I hear events are sold out or packed with people. Back in 2007 I went to a signing for Eclipse (Twilight series) and I was shocked at the 1000+ sold out event, everyone there for A BOOK! This was before the Twilight movies too. Insane.

  12. Great post, Becca! I loved reading about your author interactions and seeing the photos. You're so lucky to make it to the Fierce Reads tour and Dark Days! That would have been amazing to meet Leigh Bardugo and Danielle Paige! I agree with you--I think it is so amazing being able to interact with authors on Twitter. I also didn't know that was possible until after I started my blog. It's just so fun!

  13. I've met quite a few authors at book signing but I kind of cheated because I went to one big event where there were 50 authors. I will say however, that I have experience with conversing with authors through Skype chats. I arrange them through my library and we've only done one so far, but that one was with Marissa Meyer. It was awesome. She's so cool! Does this mean you're going to BEA???

  14. What fun book signings!!! I've only ever been to one so you aren't alone in the world where apparently many authors don't come. ;)

  17. Twitter has changed my interactions with authors since I became a blogger. I never really felt comfortable sending an email to an author with a general question or just to say hello. I can do that now with Twitter.

I am curious about your cover puppies. Headed over to look...
