Waiting on Wednesday (16)

Wednesday, April 30, 2014 10
Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine, where you can spotlight an upcoming release that you're eagerly anticipating!

This week I'm waiting on:

Heir of Fire (Throne of Glass #3) by Sarah J. Maas
Releases on: September 2nd, 2014  Add it to Goodreads!!

FROM GOODREADS: Lost and broken, Celaena Sardothien's only thought is to avenge the savage death of her dearest friend: as the King of Adarlan's Assassin, she is bound to serve this tyrant, but he will pay for what he did. Any hope Celaena has of destroying the king lies in answers to be found in Wendlyn.

Sacrificing his future, Chaol, the Captain of the King's Guard, has sent Celaena there to protect her, but her darkest demons lay in that same place. If she can overcome them, she will be Adarlan's biggest threat- and his own toughest enemy.

While Celaena learns of her true destiny, and the eyes of Erilea are on Wendlyn, a brutal and beatly force is preparing to take to the skies. Will Celaena find the strength not only to win her own battles, but to fight a war that could pit her loyalties to her own people against those she has grown to love?

This third novel in the Throne of Glass sequence, from New York Times bestselling author Sarah J. Maas, is packed with more heart-stopping action, devastating drama and swoonsome romance, and introduces some fierce new heroines to love and hate.

Why I'm waiting:

1. Sarah J. Maas is a writing GOD.
2. This probably should've been reason #1, but CHAOL. I NEED SOME MORE SWOONY CHAOL.
3. I ship Celaena and Chaol pretty darn bad. I will go down with this ship!!!
4. That bombshell that was dropped at the end of Crown of Midnight? Yup. Need to know more NOW!

What do you think of my WoW?
What is your WoW for this week?

Buy the Book  or  Add it to Goodreads!!

FROM GOODREADS: After breaking up with her bad-news boyfriend, Reagan O'Neill is ready to leave her rebellious ways behind... and her best friend, country superstar Lilah Montgomery, is nursing a broken heart of her own. Fortunately, Lilah's 24-city tour is about to kick off, offering a perfect opportunity for a girls-only summer of break-up ballads and healing hearts. But when Matt Finch joins the tour as its opening act, his boy-next-door charm proves difficult for Reagan to resist, despite her vow to live a drama-free existence. This summer, Reagan and Lilah will navigate the ups and downs of fame and friendship as they come to see that giving your heart to the right person is always a risk worth taking. A fresh new voice in contemporary romance, Emery Lord's gorgeous writing hits all the right notes.

MY THOUGHTS:

Dear Open Road Summer,

WOW! For once, I can say that I'm glad that I listened to all the Hype Monsters that have been plaguing my Twitter feed the past few weeks. You have been one of the most talked about books recently. I can honestly say, I haven't seen ONE bad thing said about you. Of course, I haven't dug through reviews or anything, but everyone just raves and raves and RAVES about you, and boy, oh boy! THEY WERE SO SO SO RIGHT!! I bought you on the hunch that I would soon be one of those raving fools, and SUCCESS!

I simply cannot get enough of your cuteness. The friendship between Reagan and Dee (Lilah) is one of the most beautifully written friendships I have ever read. It reminded me of my own best friend, Christina, in so many ways, and had me reminiscing not only our tons of crazy adventures together, but the way we are always there for one another- NO MATTER WHAT. That's the truest form of best friendship. You were such a refreshing pick for me to read at this time in my life, because even though, my best friend and I are going down different paths in our lives, we still stick by each others side. Plus, it's actually our five year friend-a-versary this week, so winning! I like to think that Reagan and Dee would be the type of besties that would be crazy enough to celebrate their friend-a-versaries as well!

Now, on to your insane swooniness. *fans self* WHERE CAN I FIND A MATT FINCH OF MY OWN?! Any ideas? Because I want- No, I NEED one! Stat. Matt Finch has easily landed a spot on my Top Five Book Boyfriends list. Every lady deserves a Matt Finch in my opinion, and I am super glad that I pre-ordered you so I was able to get an "I LOVE MATT FINCH" pin from Emery. It's easily one of my new fav pins!

Honestly, there's really nothing bad I can say about you, Open Road Summer. You were fantastic, amazing, wonderful, da bomb diggity.... I could go on and on and on, but I'll refrain- for now. My fellow readers should prepare themselves for the major book pushing I'm preparing to do for you! I sincerely hope your author, Emery Lord, writes more Reagan and Dee stories. I wouldn't mind reading a spin-off book told from Dee's POV, because I would totes be down for that!!!!  For now though, I'll just have to settle for rereading you all the time, and that's why I give you the highly coveted rating of FIVE hearts! WOOT!

Love Always,

Becca

Bookish Banter (14) - Book Stickers Are For The Birds

Monday, April 28, 2014 10
Welcome, welcome to Bookish Banter! This is a weekly blog post where I talk about bookish topics with Elizabeth of Redhead Reader and Ellen of Pottermorebooks!

This week's discussion is...

How do you feel about stickers on books?
Does it drive you nuts when you try to take them off, and the dready sticky residue is left over? Or do you just leave the stickers on them?

My answer...

This is one of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to buying books. I seriously loathe stickers on books. LOATHE them, I tell you!!!!! I do not want a price tag sticker left on my book, so of course, I have to peel them off, and when they leave that sticky residue on them...UGH!! SERIOUSLY?! I just can't....

The rage this fills me with is monumental.

What happened to the days when we had Borders bookstores? I mean, at least, they knew what they were doing when they put barcode stickers on books. They just came off so beautifully, and left nada behind!

Basically, I believe that stickers on books are a no no, and I refuse to leave them on my pretty books. DIE, BOOK STICKERS!!!

What about YOU?
How do you feel about stickers on books?
Do you hate them as much as me, or could you care less?

Bookish Genders

GENDERIZING BOOKS...

This is something that happened earlier tonight, and I haven't been able to get my mind off of it. It's been bugging the hell out of me, and I really think this is an issue that needs to be discussed STAT.

If you follow me on Instagram (@PIVOTBOOKREVIEWS), you know that the majority of my pictures are of books that I indulge in buying. I love my books, and I love taking pictures of my books. Well, a newish user found my account (most likely from the billions of hastags I use), and found a picture of one of my recent book hauls, which included Rebel Belle by Rachel Hawkins, which I admit I haven't gotten to yet. However, he (who shall not be named) liked the picture, and commented that he really wanted to read it, but his mom wouldn't let him.

You wanna know why?

BECAUSE (SHE SAYS) IT'S A GIRL BOOK...

-_-

Excuse me, but are you friggin kidding me right now? Your kid LOVES to read, right? Number one, you should be ECSTATIC just about that fact. When I was in high school, I was bullied for the mere fact that I enjoyed reading. Even to this day, (I'm 23) people give me shit about it, but do I care? Not now, because it's what I love. But when you're in high school and being judged because of what you enjoy doing in your free time, the majority of kids STOP doing it just to fit in. So personally, I believe you should be happy that your kid loves to read so much and doesn't give two shits about what others think about that fact.

Second of all, who are you to judge if a book is just for boys or just for girls? If you don't mind me asking, how exactly did you decide if it was just for boys or girls? By the cover? By the gender of the POV?

HA! Didn't your mother teach you 'NOT TO JUDGE A BOOK BY ITS COVER'?!?! It may be just me, but I'm pretty sure everyone was taught that particular lesson. And as to the gender of the POV? Who the hell cares if it's a male or female? As far as I'm concerned, males and females go through the same types of emotional situations. Sure, they may handle them in different ways, but I feel that if you educate yourself (through books, HELLO) about the way the opposite gender deals with certain things, then you are a pretty badass, educated individual. AND I COMMEND YOU!!

And finally, just because you want to read a book told from the opposite sex POV from yourself, doesn't change your sexuality. I have proof of that. One of my best friends is a male, who is straight, and actually prefers reading from a female POV rather than a male. It is all a matter of preference, and I really don't think ANYONE, whether you are a parent or not, has the right to determine if a book is just for a certain gender or not.

The fact that parents actually do this, ticks me off to no end (if you couldn't tell by now).

LET IT GOOOOOO.

Yes, I just broke out in Frozen lyrics. But seriously, let it go. Let your kids read whatever the hell they want. Well, maybe not erotica, but you get what I'm saying. Let them embrace themselves, and be who they are. Because trust me, all you are doing is holding them back.

If they want to read a book that you define as 'just for girls', what is the worst that can happen? What are you afraid of? If it's their sexuality (which I'm presuming), a book isn't going to change that. We are born who we are. It's not a choice. It's not a friggin choice what we like. It's as easy as me saying that I like Lucky Charms instead of liking Raisin Bran. My taste buds weren't made for Raisin Bran- they were made to like friggin LUCKY FRIGGIN CHARMS!!!! Just like I wasn't made to enjoy every book told from a male's POV. Like it or not, it's just the way I was hardwired up in the head.

DEAL WITH IT.
(AND let  your friggin kids deal with it, and ENJOY themselves by reading whatever the hell they want!)

Waiting on Wednesday (15)

Wednesday, April 23, 2014 8
Waiting on Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking The Spine, where you can spotlight an upcoming release that you're eagerly anticipating!

This week I'm waiting on:

Afterworlds by Scott Westerfeld
Releases on: September 23rd, 2014  Add it to Goodreads!

FROM GOODREADS: From the #1 New York Times bestselling author Scott Westerfeld comes a smart, thought-provoking novel-within-a-novel that you won't be able to put down.

Darcy Patel has put college on hold to publish her teen novel, Afterworlds. With a contract in hand, she arrives in New York City with no apartment, no friends, and all the wrong clothes. But lucky for Darcy, she's taken under the wings of other seasoned and fledgling writers who help her navigate the city and the world of writing and publishing. Over the course of a year, Darcy finishes her book, faces critique, and falls in love.

Woven into Darcy's personal story is her novel, Afterworlds, a suspenseful thriller about a teen who slips into the "Afterworld" to survive a terrorist attack. The Afterworld is a place between the living and the dead, and where many unsolved- and terrifying- stories need to be reconciled. LIke Darcy, Lizzie too falls in love... until a new threat resurfaces, and her special gifts may not be enough to protect those she cares about most.

Why I'm Waiting:

1. The novel within a novel aspect sort of reminds me of Fangirl, which I loved!!

2. SCOTT WESTERFELD IS THE BOMB DOT COM!!

3. I love the teen author aspect. I would love to read about the struggles Darcy faces as a young novelist, like myself.

4. I remember reading somewhere that Darcy wrote her book during NaNoWriMo, which is awesome!! I really want to read about her NaNo experience. I know mine was rough, but totally worth it and super fun!!

Sweet Reckoning by Wendy Higgins
Published by: Harper Teen on 4/29/14
Pages: 381
Format: ARC Paperback
Genre: Paranormal
Source: Won
Rating: 4/5
Buy the Book  or  Add it to Goodreads!!

FROM GOODREADS: It's time.

Evil is running rampant and sweet Anna Whitt is its target. Nobody knows when or how the Dukes will strike, but Anna and her Nephilim allies will do anything necessary to rid the earth of the demons and their opressive ways.

The stakes are higher than ever, and Anna is determined that the love she feels will be her strength, not a liability. But trying to protect the ones she loves while running for her life and battling demonic forces proves to be perilous- especially as faces are changing and trust is fleeting. When the Duke of Lust sends Anna's great love, Kaidan Rowe, to work against her, Anna must decide how much she's prepared to risk.

In the most sensual and fast-paced installment yet, Sweet Reckoning brings all the beloved Neph together one last time to fight for their freedom.

MY THOUGHTS:

Dearest Sweet Reckoning,

I have been waiting to get my hands on you ever since I finished that last sentence of Sweet Peril, and when I won a copy of you, I nearly shrieked in excitement. Well, I'll be honest, I actually did shriek a tiny bit! The first two books in your trilogy were just fabulous and I flew through them quite fast. I knew, without a doubt in my mind, that I would be exactly the same way with you.

Surprise, surprise. You are quite full of them, aren't you? Sneaky little book. It seemed like every chapter included some shocking detail, which only had me flying through the pages faster! I fell even more in love with all of the characters than I thought was possible. That's the sign of a truly great author. (Psst, Wendy, HOW DARE YOU KILL SO AND SO AND SO!!! MY HEART IS WRECKED!!) Yes, there are some deaths in you. I mean, your main plot is about a war, but it killed me to see some of the ones who did actually lose their lives. *sad face*

All in all, I thought you were a pretty solid ending for a series that I am very sad to see end. In all honesty, I wish there would be more books, but alas, that, unfortunately, doesn't seem to be in the cards. If I could change anything about you though, I would maybe add a little bit more action and a little less running. I think some of the things were wrapped up a tiny bit too easily. I wanted to see some more struggling, and that is the reason behind you only receiving four hearts from me, my dear Sweet Reckoning. However, please let your author, Wendy Higgins, know she has rightfully earned a spot on my auto-buy list! I truly cannot wait to see what she has up her sleeves for us next!

All my love,
Becca

Bookish Banter (13) - Bookmark Me

Monday, April 21, 2014 16
Welcome, welcome to Bookish Banter! This is a weekly blog post where I talk about bookish topics with Elizabeth of Redhead Reader and Ellen of Pottermorebooks!

This week's discussion is...

How do you bookmark?
Have a special bookmark? Do you dog-ear pages? Or perhaps, use the closest thing to you to shove between the pages?

My answer...

Once upon a time, there was a girl who loved books more than life itself, and this girl had bookmarks of every shape, size, and color, which she used to mark her pages, until one day (last Christmas), her fab Secret Santa (Emily from Falling for YA) sent her a B-E-A-U-TIFUL dragonfly hook bookmark as a gift. From that day on, she was hooked on book hooks (pun intended) and hasn't used a paper bookmark since!

Here's a picture of my pretty book hook in use!! I heart it SO much!!

What about YOU?
How do you bookmark your pages?

Cover Puppies (13) - The Ring and The Crown by Melissa de la Cruz

Thursday, April 17, 2014 2

Cover Puppies is a weekly post here on Pivot Book Reviews, where I combine my extreme love for my doggies and YA books, and recreate my favorite book covers with my puppies!

This week, I'm featuring..

(Gentry)

The Ring and The Crown by Melissa de la Cruz!

FROM GOODREADS: Princess Marie-Victoria, heir to the Lily Throne, and Aelwyn Myrddn, bastard daughter of the Mage of England, grew up together. But who will rule, and who will serve?

Quiet and gentle, Marie has never lived up to the ambitions of her mother, Queen Eleanor the Second, Supreme Ruler of the Franco-British Empire. With the help of her Head Merlin, Emrys, Eleanor has maintained her stanglehold on the world's only source of magic. She rules the most powerful empire the world has ever seen.

But even with the aid of Emrys' magic, Eleanor's extended lifespan is nearing its end. The princess must marry and produce an heir or the Empire will be vulnerable to its greatest enemy, Prussia. The two kingdoms must unite to end the war, and the only solution is a match between Marie and Prince Leopold VII, heir to the Prussian throne. But Marie has always loved Gill, her childhood friend and soldier of the Queen's Guard.

Together, Marie and Aelwyn, a powerful magician in her own right, come up with a plan. Aelwyn will take on Marie's face, allowing the princess to escape with Gill and live the quiet life she's always wanted. And Aelwyn will get what she's always dreamed of- the chance to rule. But the court intrigue and hunger for power in Lenoran England run deeper than anyone could imagine. In the end, there is only one rule that matters in Eleanor's court: trust no one.

I'm pretty sure I'm obsessed with the cuteness factor of how this turned out!! I have yet to read The Ring and The Crown unfortunately, because I just received my copy in the mail yesterday! It was so weird, because I was sitting here trying to pick a cover to recreate, when the doorbell rang..MAIL TIME! And The Ring and The Crown was the first book I pulled out. The cover is even prettier in person, guys! I knew I had my cover the second my fingertips touched it! Gentry was not in a cooperative mood either. She wanted nothing to do with Cover Puppies this week, but you wouldn't be able to tell from the one picture I got of her without moving!

Half Bad by Sally Green - Book Review Letter

Tuesday, April 15, 2014 6
Half Bad by Sally Green
Published by: Viking Juvenile on 3/4/14
Pages: 380
Format: Hardcover
Genre: Paranormal
Source: Won
Rating: 1/5
Buy the Book  or  Add it to Goodreads!!
FROM GOODREADS: Half Bad by Sally Green is a breathtaking debut novel about one boy's struggle for survival in a hidden society of witches.

You can't read, can't write, but you heal fast, even for a witch.

You get sick if you stay indoors after dark.

You hate White Witches but love Annalise, who is one.

You've been kept in a cage since you were fourteen.

All you've got to do is escape and find Mercury, the Black With who eats boys. And do that before your seventeenth birthday.

Easy.

MY THOUGHTS (in letter form):

Dear Half Bad,

I had exceedingly high hopes for you. That much is true, but you sadly disappointed me. I picked you up to enjoy with my blogging buddy Jessi from Novel Heartbeat for my very first buddy read, and I was so so so excited. But alas, it didn't take long for me to figure out you just weren't for me.

It's not you. It's me, really. I'll be honest. I'm just not that into you. Whether it was your constantly changing narrative or the weird *sexual* mentions, I'm not really sure. I continued to read you despite not enjoying myself. I just have this problem where I can't force myself to DNF a book. I wanted more from you, and you just didn't deliver. I wanted more about the magic!! More about the different witches! But it just never really happened.

However, don't take it personally, because according to a lot of my goodreads friends, they gave you five stars and absolutely loved you. Like I said earlier, it's not you. It's me. We just weren't meant to be.

XO,
Becca

**Please note: I've been in a blogging slump. I'm not really sure why. It could be because I have like no extra time on my hands between work and class. So I decided to switch up the way I reviewed Half Bad, and it was a lot of fun!!! I really enjoyed writing this review! I hope you like it too!***

Bookish Banter (12) - Let's talk about movie adaptations, baby!

Monday, April 14, 2014 2
Welcome, welcome to Bookish Banter! This is a weekly blog post where I talk about bookish topics with Elizabeth of Redhead Reader and Ellen of Pottermorebooks!

This week's discussion is...

MOVIE ADAPTATIONS!
Do you see them in theatres, watch them when they come out on DVD, or avoid them altogether?

My answer...

Honestly, I think it somewhat depends on what movie adaptation we are talking about. Most of the time, I really like to read a book before I watch the movie adapt, just because I'm finnick-y (see what I did there? FINNICK-y) like that! So when it came to Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, Vampire Academy, Divergent, I was right there at the theatre during the first week to see the movie! I mean, who am I kidding? I LOVED all of these books to death. I ship the characters and everything, so it was a must to go to the theatre to see them, if not once, then multiple times. AND BUY ALL THE DVDS!!!!!

Some others, like Percy Jackson, Beautiful Creatures, and The Book Thief.... well when they came out, I hadn't read the books. I DID watch Percy before reading the books (Note: I finally read the first Percy book this January. *LOVED* But I didn't enjoy either of the movies and their vastly different plots esp. after reading the books), and I watched B/C before I read it too (BUT the movie made me want to read it, and I loved it despite how different the movie was. I actually love both! Maybe it would've been different had I read the book first), but I have not read The Book Thief yet so I haven't watched the DVD- even though, I own both the book and movie. I'm weird like that. I will get to it, I swear. I just really want to read the book before watching it, because everybody just raves about both! Anyways, like I said before, it really depends on how much I loved the book, if I've read it before it hits theatres, etc. etc.

So, that being said, what are some movie adaptations I am dying to see?

1. THE FAULT IN OUR STARS!!!! However, I still haven't made the decision on whether or not I'll brave the theatres for this one. I mean, even the trailer makes me a blubbering mess, so I'm not sure fellow theatre peeps would appreciate my sobbing.

2. THE 5TH WAVE! So this one is a must see go to the theatre movie adapt for me! I just love love love The 5th Wave, and I'm freaking out about it being a movie!!!! AH! Not so sure how I feel about Chloe Moretz being the MC, though.

3. DIVERGENT! Okay, so I've already been there, saw that, but can I PLEASE go again!?!?! This movie is perf.

4. All the Mockingjays! YES PLEASE!

5. ELEANOR & PARK! Pretty excited about this one as well. I love Rainbow Rowell. Although I really, really wish they would announce a Fangirl movie ASAP, because I will die the day they announce something like that.

6. IF I STAY! Not so sure if I'll go to the theatre for this one. I mean the book was okay, but I'm not really sure I want to watch that depressing of a movie. I kind of feel 'meh' about both the book and movie. I know, I know. I'm a total black sheep on this one.

Okay, those are all the ones I can think of off the top of my head. Know any that I'm forgetting?

What about YOU?
Do you watch Movie Adaptations? When/How?
Let me know in the comments!

As always, thanks for visiting Pivot Book Reviews! I wuv you!

Cover Puppies (12) - This Song Will Save Your Life by Leila Sales

Thursday, April 10, 2014 8
Cover Puppies is a weekly post here on Pivot Book Reviews, where I combine my extreme love for my doggies and YA books, and recreate my favorite book covers with my puppies!

This week, I am featuring...

(Gentry)

FROM GOODREADS: Making friends has never been Elise Dembowski's strong suit. All throughout her life, she's been the butt of every joke and the outsider in every conversation. When a final attempt at popularity fails, Elise nearly gives up. Then she stumbles upon a warehouse party where she meets Vicky, a girl in a band who accepts her; Char, a cute, yet mysterious disc jockey; Pippa, a carefree spirit from England; and most importantly, a love for DJing.

Told in a refreshingly genuine and laugh-out-loud funny voice, THIS SONG WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE is an exuberant novel about identity, friendship, and the power of music to bring people together.

ISN'T THIS COVER THE CUTEST EVA?! I am in wuv wif it. I looked up this book on Amazon the other day, and was able to read an excerpt, and I basically decided I needed a copy ASAP! My beautiful hardcover from Book Outlet arrived yesterday ($6, what, what?!), and the moment I laid my pretty little eyes on it, I KNEW I had to do a Cover Puppy recreation. It was, like, mandatory. I even got Gentry to wear glasses AND headphones. She was surprisingly very good at cooperating today. I suppose she must be getting used to the shenanigans I put her through this week! ANYWAYS. I'm pretty excited to dive into it. Also, sorry for all the CapsLock craziness! Haha!
