GoodReads † Amazon † B&N

As a general's daughter in a vast empire that revels in war and enslaves those it conquers, seventeen-year-old Kestrel has two choices: she can join the military or get married. But Kestrel has other intentions. One day, she is startled to find a kindred spirit in a young slave up for auction. Arin's eyes seem to defy everything and everyone. Following her instinct, Kestrel buys him'with unexpected consequences. It's not long before she has to hide her growing love for Arin. But he, too, has a secret, and Kestrel quickly learns that the price she paid for a fellow human is much higher than she ever could have imagined.

Set in a richly imagined new world, The Winner's Curse is a story of deadly games where everything is at stake, and the gamble is whether you will keep your head or lose your heart.

Favorite quote(s) from Chapters 31-42:

"He had used her. He had lied. Nothing he said meant anything. If she was to feel shame, it should be for having been so easily fooled."

Dear The Winner's Curse (Part Four),

Well, I finally finished you. I didn't want to finish you, because I knew what was coming, and that ending still kills my heart every single time I read it. It was especially hard this week due to the break-up I'm going through. It shredded my heart strings.

In the last quarter of you, The Winner's Curse, there's a lot of interesting things happening. Kestrel first gets to see Jess, who is surviving the nightlock poisoning but just barely, so Kestrel then begs Arin to find the antidote. While Arin is out looking for said antidote, the disgusting Cheat pays a visit, and makes Kestrel wash his feet! EW! Even thinking about that part makes me cringe! Arin finds the antidote, and a way to fight the Valorians when they make their return, while he's at it. Arin ends up killing someone, and saving another. A lot of people are killed/injured in this last part of you, because of the fight. Kestrel is busy fighting her feelings for Arin and continuing to devise a way to escape, all while fighting off an unwanted sexual advance. EW AGAIN! But Kestrel receives a few freedoms from Arin too, which ultimately lead her to her escape plan. Arin catches her right when she reaches the harbor, but proceeds to let her leave. Kestrel battles the sea for three whole days before reaching the capital and coming to an agreement with the Emperor-- one that neither her or Arin are happy about. To give Arin and his people their freedom, Kestrel is to marry the heir to be......

AND JUST LIKE THAT YOU END. WITH THAT CLIFFHANGER. HOW CAN YOU DO THAT?! Ahem. Sorry. But that ending was a total killer. I'm desperate to start The Winner's Crime ASAP, which luckily, we are continuing our read-along with it next week! YAY! I think my favorite part of you besides the kissing parts (duh) was the moment Kestrel hears Arin sing. Beautiful!!

Well, I'm off to cry myself to sleep, with a broken heart,

Love always,

Becca
