FROM GOODREADS: There are whispers of a ghost in the slaughterhouse where sixteen-year-old Wen assists her father in his medical clinic- a ghost who grants wishes to those who need them most. When on of the Noor, men hired as cheap factory labor, humiliates Wen, she makes an impulsive wish of her own, and the Ghost grants it. Brutally.
Guilt-ridden, Wen befriends the Noor, including their outspoken leader, a young man named Melik. At the same time, she is lured by the mystery of the Ghost and learns he has been watching her... for a very long time.
As deadly accidents fuel tensions within the factory, Wen must confront her growing feelings for Melik, who is enraged at the sadistic factory bosses and the prejudice faced by his people at the hand of Wen's, and her need to appease the Ghost, who is determined to protect her against any threat- real or imagined. She must decide whom she can trust, because as her heart is torn, the factory is exploding around her... and she might go down with it.
MY THOUGHTS:
Dear Of Metal and Wishes,
WOWZA. That was my first reaction to you. I seriously could NOT put you down, which really surprises me, because when you first released, you were just a blip on my radar. I mean, sure, you have a gorgeous cover, but I hadn't seen much about you. Then I saw a few fangirly reviews, and happened to see you sitting on the shelf at my local bookstore, practically begging me to buy you. I couldn't resist. I'll admit one of the main reasons was because you are pegged as a Phantom of the Opera retelling, and even though I have never seen/read Phantom of the Opera, I am an avid lover of any and all retellings because they rock my socks, and you are seriously one of my faves.
Going into you, I thought you were a stand alone, but I am oh so happy to say that you are part of a duology. THANK THE LORD. I NEED MORE. *ahem* So I guess you were a mix of fantasy as well, which was even more awesome. Wen lives in a slaughterhouse with her dad , who is the medic and she helps him out with all the nasty and gruesome injuries. You do not fail at all with all the goriness, Of Metal and Wishes. I felt like there should've been blood stains on every page of you. So you aren't very much for the faint of heart or easily grossed out, but I still think if someone can overlook that, then they definitely need to read you. Anyways, there's a ghost that lives in this factory and people leave it gifts to grant their wishes. Wen makes a half-hearted wish, knowing that it won't ever come true, but then it does. She is filled with regret and guilt after it does, and decides to befriend the incoming foreign Noor, who every one despises, in hopes of redemption. Not such a good idea, because then all of her friends turn on her, but I loved that Wen went out of her way to help people that weren't her own, and desperately needed all the help they could get. The Noor are slaves, and everyone practically hates them. Enter Melik, the leader of the Noor, and the swoony boy that Wen starts to develop feelings for. FORBIDDEN ROMANCE?! Oh my gosh, you know the way to my heart.
And that Ghost? Que epic creepiness. Seriously loved how your story line played out, and I'm dying for the next book to release. WHY SO FAR AWAY?! Ugh. Oh well, your sibling will definitely be worth the wait.
You have SO much drama, mystery, and suspense, Of Metal and Wishes. You definitely stand out in my mind with a fresh retelling. You are unlike anything I have ever read before, and one of the best books I've read this year. Two words. Hauntingly beautiful. FIVE HEARTS.
Buying all your author's other books RIGHT NOW,
Becca
