Swaggy Idea for Your Shoebox Swag!

Tuesday, July 8, 2014

I am constantly receiving swag for my favorite books, whether through giveaways, signings, friends, etc. But what is one to do with all that swag? I mean, mine was gathering in a box, as I'm sure most of yours is as well.

But I want to show mine off! Not let it collect dust!

Well, never fear, my friends! I have just the solution for this problem. I originally did my first swag project about a year ago, but I did another yesterday, and had quite the reaction to it on instagram! Most of who saw it wanted to know how I did it, so here's my how-to solution for all your shoebox swag!

Wanna do it yourself?

Here's what you'll need:
(1) package of Locktite Fun-Tak Mounting Putty (or any kind of mounting putty! This is just the type I use!)

(1) 24X36 Poster Frame (Also, you can use any size. This just happens to be the kind I got. For only $10 from Wal-Mart!)

LOTSA SWAG!

How I did it:

1. Unwrap your Poster Frame, and take it apart, but keep the preprinted picture on the inside. You'll be using this to adhere your swag to!

2. Flip over the preprinted picture, and gather your shoebox swag!

3. Play TETRIS! No, really. Trying to make all your swag fit is like playing an intense Tetris game. I suggest laying it out how you want it, before sticking it on the page.

4. Once you have it all laid out how you want it, start putting your putty (giggles) on the back of each individual piece of swag. On bookmarks, I basically put a tiny bit on the top and bottom on the back. For bigger pieces, I just did each corner. But whatever works for you, is good! I just went piece by piece, and stuck them to the paper before moving on to the next one.

5. All your swag is stuck down? Good. Now it's time to put the clear cover on top of the poster, and then put your frame back together.

6. Hang your beautiful masterpiece wherever you like, and stare fondly at it!! :)

Finished wall:

Here are my two finished Shoebox Swag Posters hanging up!

BONUS IDEA!
Along with bookmarks and postcards, I also have a ton of bookish pins! I finally pinned them all to a tote (pictured below!)

Let's discuss!
What do you think of my Shoebox Swag Posters? Are you going to make one now? Send me pictures! I would love to see the finished project!

Also, I want to know, what do you do with your swag? Does it collect dust in a shoebox, like mine once did? Or do you showcase it in some way?

  1. Oh wow! That is an incredible idea! Yet I still mourn for I do not have any wall space in my room. If there's not bookshelves or other necessary furniture in front of it, I have movie posters up! Ones that are just too dear to me to remove.

Plus I also have other photographs up--professional ones of places I've been to!

But this is still an amazing idea! Might have to write directions down and then when I hopefully someday get a place of my own, I'll decorate the walls there!

  2. This is brilliant Becca!! I have it bookmarked so I can do this whenever I get my own place for my library room! (no matter how big or small, one room will be a library room!). I'm also thinking that for those pieces of swag you'd want to show off both sides, it'd be great to cover them in clear protective plastic and hang them as part of wind chimes or decoration for a lamp or the like! Like dangling charms!

  5. This is a seriously awesome idea! I have a lot of SWAG, too, and I've been wondering what to do with it. I don't want to get rid of it - my swag is a mark of honor; they carry memories! But they're sitting in a box (albeit an awesome box), and that seems . . . . sad. No one but the dark particles can see my SWAG. I'm totally using this idea!! Thanks for sharing!

  8. This is such a great idea! I did something like this once with postcards from vacation, but it never occured to me to do it with my book swag. I am definitely going to do this, thanks for the tip! Right now, all my stuff is hanging out in a (yes, shoebox sized) clear container on my bookcase. Boring!

  9. This is such a great idea, Becca! I think I might have to try it out... Currently my book swag resides in a round pencil holder where they are easily accessible when I'm in need of a bookmark :) and in think this is especially perfect for all the postcards and magnets that I don't know what to do with!

  11. This is such an awesome idea, Becca! I want one too, but most of my swag has been lost in between books and I'm too lazy to look for them. Lol. Maybe one day. Great post! Thanks for the suggestion. :D

  15. SO JEALOUS!
I'd really really like to make something like this, but since I have next to none swag, I can't. When authors hear that I'm from Europe, they always withdraw their offer to send me some. So yeah, I'm just sitting here, being jealous haha
